♦ Basudha's Closure & Handover

On the 5th and 6th NOV 2011 friends of Basudha got together at Basudha  to discuss its fate after relocation of rice conservation work to a new farm in Odisha (previously spelt Orissa). The friends objected to the idea of closing down Basudha campus, and instead wanted to keep the campus alive with some basic cultural and awareness programs to be held periodically.

Debashis Chatterjee offered to pay part of the price of the property as a loan to D. Deb in order to facilitate the setting up of the new farm in Odisha. He proposed to withhold legal transfer of the property until two years later, keeping Deb's option to return in two years. Chatterjee also offered to maintain Basudha at his own expense for two years until DD's decision to return. If Deb decides that Basudha's activities can continue without much constraint, DD would repay the loan to Chatterjee, and re-engage Basudha to continue with all conservation activities on campus. If, on the contrary, it appears to be impossible to conduct any work on Basudha campus, a legal deed of transfer of the property will be prepared to formally hand over the property to Chatterjee. Chatterjee's generous offer was unanimously accepted as the best possible option to keep Basudha alive for at least two years.

DD's proposition to stop Basudha Festival from 2011 onwards was opposed by the friends, who decided that the next Basudha Festival would be held sometime in February 2012, when presumably all the rice would be harvested in Odisha.

Basudha is not going to die soon!
